Time for a heart to heart and a sip of pink tinted Strawberry flavored Crio Bru! Chocolate has a way of paving the way for the best chit chats, am I right?!
Hello all of you wonderful people! It's so nice to have you here for another round of TIDBITS Talk: April Edition. If you were at my home we'd be taking this chat outside because the weather is GORGEOUS. It has breathed a whole new sense of joy into my soul!
March's TIDBITS Talk was a treasure trove of information from all of you! The comments section is an amazing read!
- Several of you gave your best tips and tricks of how to feed a family, I feel like there should be an ebook with all these tips in one place!
- I cried as I read through your suggestions of how to rediscover your inner child. Nancy inspired me to buy a pogo stick and to dance with abandon whenever I feel like it
- Karen reminded us all that the best vacations can be found in our own home towns. So many experiences and memories to be made just minutes from our homes! She inspired me to drop everything and take a quickie vacation with my sister Cami for Spring Break that involved a crash course on the train system. Our poor children had to put their precious lives into the hands of two clueless travelers, but we did it, we survived, and we laughed out loud many, many times
- Many of you had a good laugh at my son's very poorly orchestrated lie, if you ever need a pick me up in your day, this video will do it
- I found some fellow Butcher Box fans! I never knew I could get excited about home delivery meat, but I'm diggin' it big time.
- I've converted a few condiment lovers over to Sir Kensington's side. The Special Sauce, ohhh, it's so good!
And many more goodies! If you have a moment, the comments section is such a treasure to read through.
Congrats to Kellie, our Crio Bru winner. Report back on those Cacao Chips!
Now let's dive into some April chit chat!
IMPORTANT ITEMS OF BUSINESS TODAY
- I'll be answering an email from one of my readers: “Why do you meditate, what does it do for you, and how did you get into it?”
- One of you wants to know what my husband does for work, which I'm interpreting as, “How did you afford to quit your job to stay at home and cook and talk about food all day?” Haha!
- Kids and Manners – someone save me
- Comfortable Jeans and do they exist
- Reader Highlight – The Strength of a Child
- My son is back to tell you where babies come from . . . just watch
- Things I'm lovin' lately: Almond Butter that's good for you and tastes like cookie dough? Yep!
- Crio Bru Flavor of the Month and a GIVEAWAY!
Let's do this!
MY MEDITATION JOURNEY
My meditation journey began in 2013, the year this picture was taken. This might help you understand why I went searching for peace, ha ha!
I'll answer each of these questions individually:
WHY DO YOU MEDITATE?
Oh wow, that's a hard one to answer because the specific answer to this could change on a daily basis. Basically, I meditate to help me feel calm amidst the storm called life. Some may call me a Control Freak (who me?), OCD (Life can't go on until the dishes are done), and/or Impulsive (working on 7 ideas at one time is normal, right?).
I'll admit my toe dips into all of these personalities on a daily basis which sets me up for imminent distress. Three years of regularly practicing meditation has helped me to see the natural waves of life happening around me without feeling like every wave is going to pull me under.
I've learned to observe emotions, acknowledge them, and let them go. No, I'm not an expert at this by any means, but I have come a LONG way and I love that I am able to teach these skills to my children, as well, while they are still young. I sure could have used better mind control in high school and college when I thought every breakup or friend mishap was surely prime time news worthy.
WHAT DOES MEDITATION DO FOR YOU?
It gives me confidence in my ability to do hard things, to feel anxious/scared/sad without thinking I will always feel that way, to see my failures as stepping stones to success, and above all to give myself a break when I'm not the perfect mother. Meditation has helped me be able to show compassion to myself, just as I would show it to another. In short, it's changed my way of thinking and made life's challenges feel lighter.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO MEDIATION?
For whatever reason, the idea of meditation originally seemed kooky, awkward, and extreme. However, something about the overwhelming task of caring for three kids 2 and under makes any possible “fix” sound worth trying.
My first attempts were simply me, sitting on a pillow, quietly humming in the dark (don't laugh, I was just doing what I saw in movies!). That felt strange so I ordered 2 books and a DVD on Amazon. I learned a little, but still felt lost. I took some yoga/meditation classes, did an online course, and still, nothing was clicking for me.
My light bulb moment came when I discovered the app Headspace. This app with it's colorful, playful teaching videos and quiet, peaceful, guided meditations had me finally understanding the meaning and purpose of mediation.
The array of topics from Anxiety to Sleep to Happiness spoke to my organized soul and I was able to confidently jump in and embrace it.
A year ago I discovered Brooke Snow's Gospel Meditation Course and I can honestly say it was the turning point that stopped my inner degrading voice. “LIFE CHANGING” is the best way to describe it and I can guarantee your world will be brighter if you take this course no matter how glum your current situation may be. Listen to her podcast on Finding Your Life Purpose for a little sneak peek of all you can learn in this course. You'll never be the same.
How about you? Tell me what you think regarding mediation! I'd love to hear your thoughts on this one!
WORK HARD, PLAY HARD?
My husband's motto should instead be, “Play hard and call it work” haha!
Never have I ever personally seen anyone else take something they're so passionate about and turn it into a full-time job. My husbandly literally “plays” on a daily basis for his work and the proof is on his Instagram account.
It's absolutely impossible for me to tell you what his specific job title is, but in a large nutshell he is a Dirt Bike/Snow Bike Athlete, Motorcycle Mechanic, Self Taught Motorcycle Engineer, Magazine Cover Model, Riding Coach, Snow Bike Stunt Man, Inventor, Crazy Mom Therapist, Movie Star, Kids' Role Model, and of course, his most important gig, a professional TIDBITS Food Taster. Basically, he does a little of everything and appears to the outside world to be playing his life away. He's an inspiration to many and I'm very proud to be his occasional Stunt Mama Motorcycle Side Kick.
WELL MANNERED KIDS AND CAN THEY EXIST?
Do you ever feel like the harder you try to teach your kids manners, the worse it gets? Like just the mere reminder of, “Remember, no fart jokes at the restaurant” turns into an array of giggles at every sound that even remotely resembles flatulence in front of innocent bystanders who thought they were going out for an enjoyable dinner. Is my husband correct when he says it's a losing battle to insist on perfect manners from twin 6-year-old boys? Any advice on the subject is greatly appreciated! I am not winning on this one at all.
COMFORTABLE JEANS – SAVE ME FROM MY STRETCHY PANTS
I'm no fashionista, you've heard me express my yoga pants love before, but I feel at my “cutest” when I'm in a good lookin' pair of jeans. Problem is that I'm so used to comfy, stretchy “pants” that wearing jeans feels very close to a straitjacket for my legs. Help a girl out!!! Where can I get a cute, comfy, jean?!
READER HIGHLIGHT – THE STRENGTH OF A CHILD
This month's reader highlight comes from Alyssa and her daughter Kimber.
Kimber was born April 2013 weighing just 3 lbs 9 Oz. She didn’t cry, couldn’t eat and hardly ever moved. 2 months and 3 NICUs later she finally received a diagnosis of Prader Willi Syndrome. Prader Willi (PWS) is a rare and extremely complex genetic disorder caused by a deletion of the paternal 15th Chromosome. PWS causes many medical and behavioral complications but is most known for causing a constant sense of hunger. Kimber is hungry 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Despite facing challenges most kids don’t even have to think about, Kimber is a bright and contagiously happy 6-year-old. She loves to read, ride her horse, and help mom in the kitchen. Kimber is thriving thanks to the support and continued education provided to her family through the Utah Prader Willi Syndrome Association. This association is run completely by volunteers (parents of children with PWS) and funds received during fundraisers and awareness events held every year between April and May. Without funding, Kimber and other kids living with this complex disorder cannot get the support they need to live to their full potential.
Click Here to donate to the Prader Willi Association. It's simple and quick to do, and even $5 will help. If you'd like to continue to follow Kimber's story, you can LIKE Alyssa's Facebook page. It'll make you a better person watching this little girl grow, I can promise you that.
If you have a business, blog, cause, or product you want to be highlighted, send me an email. I am honored to bring recognition to you wonderful people and to help your life passions grow!
WHERE DO BABIES COME FROM – HERE YOU THOUGHT YOU KNEW
In case you were looking for an instructional video to show your kids, my hilarious son is back with some words of wisdom.
THINGS I'M LOVIN' LATELY
RX Peanut Butter and Almond Butter: Now in a jar! I highly suggest the Chocolate Peanut Butter (very Reeses Peanut Butter Cup-like) and the Vanilla Almond Butter (tastes like a sugar cookie!). They have no added sugar in them and are the perfect amount of creamy. I am hooked for life!
Air Fryer: Do you guys have one of these? I can't say I use it a ton, but the 2 – 5 times I use it a week, I really, REALLY love it! I made this Panko Crusted Halibut in the air fryer recently and that was the recipe that finally convinced me it was time to tell you about this wonderful appliance.
Strangely enough, I use the air fryer most for reheating leftovers (it brings them back to life in a wonderfully crispy way – crunchy bites of shredded pork anyone?) and for packaged foods like my favorite Veggie Fries. Other things I've loved in it – tempura vegetables, tofu, reheated rice (crispy, buttery rice clumps, yum!), sweet potato fries, turkey steaks, pot stickers, and so much more. I have this Go Wise brand and I think it's fabulous. I don't suggest going any smaller than the one I'm linking to, in fact, I wish I could have one twice the size!
ART FOR KIDS HUB
I have high energy kids, but one of them in particular really struggles to calm himself down when he's overly excited or upset. To my heavenly rescue – Art for Kids Hub! I originally discovered these “How to Draw (blank)” tutorials on YouTube, but was excited to find there was a blog where my kids could easily search for new things to draw without running into yucky content on YouTube.
These videos include an adult and child drawing and coloring fun pictures with easy to follow steps. My kids all love these videos and have created some pretty impressive drawings. I bought them all a sketchbook and they love filling it with these doodles. Try it out!
CRIO BRU FLAVOR OF THE MONTH – STRAWBERRY!
Now for our Crio Bru flavor of the month – Instant Pot Strawberry Crio Bru. I tried desperately to flavor this Crio Bru with actual strawberries, but both fresh and freeze dried strawberries made the Crio Bru taste kind of funky. I had all but given up on the idea until my daughter suggested making it with Strawberry Milk.
Store bought strawberry milk tends to be loaded with sugar and dyes so I wasn't thrilled about the idea, but with a little research, I discovered a couple of brands that were better than most.
Horizon Organic Strawberry Milk is sweetened with cane sugar and was white, meaning it didn't have any artificial coloring in it. However, I could only find it in single serving containers so that got a little expensive. This was our favorite tastewise.
TruMoo Strawberry Milk is lower in sugar than Horizon and was easier to find in a larger size. It's bright pink color and ingredient “color added” made me think it was artificially colored so I emailed the company who stated that there are no artificial dyes in their milk. “Our strawberry milk uses beta carotene for color. It is naturally found in orange, yellow, and green leafy fruits and vegetables, and milk; also, it may be synthetically prepared.”
I'm still not 100% sure what turns it that bright pink, but honestly, for the occasional times that we enjoy this Strawberry Crio Bru, I'm not gonna stress it.

I loved your son’s video! His young voice and simplicity brings joy to this grandma’s heart who doesn’t see or hear her grandchildren often. (We live 1600 miles apart.)
I’m wearing jeans today in Support of Sexual Assault Survivors.
Marci says
Helen, the innocence of a child is the greatest thing in the world. I’m glad he could bring you some joy! Supporting a cause like that just might make me enjoy wearing pants more 🙂
Jan Mayer says
What I like most about ALL your writing is how real you are. This time it was Instant Pot Strawberry Crio Bru–I want some now!
You always simply weave your family in and out of all your writing, which shows me they are in your heart, thoughts and actions all the time. You also intelligently introduce new food ideas. Your are friendly, cheerful and cute without being gaggy-cutsey. I truly appreciate your writings almost as much as your recipes!
Marci says
Jan, you just made my entire day. It’s comments like that kick all the inner doubts to the curb and I can’t thank you enough for your timely message. You are such a kind soul to take the time to send that to me, thank you so very much 🙂
Melanie says
Hi Marci! Love this post. My mom has been raving about her air fryer and, as much as I would love one, I’m not sure I have the space!
What about using dehydrated strawberries and grinding them up to get that strawberry flavor? I bet you could whisk it with one of those hand whisks! I use one for my morning coffee and it makes the milk nice and frothy!
Debra Guillen says
I had never heard of Crio Bru. I have recently been looking at an instant pot and have been collecting recipes. Will definitely be trying this when I get my instant pot.
Marci says
Debra, that sounds great! You will love this style of cooking!

Lee, It’s a journey for sure, but once you get it, pressure cooking becomes life changing!

I just can’t do yoga pants. Jeans girl all the way
Marci says
Carly, then please oh please tell me what jeans you wear that can make you ignore the existence of yoga pants!
Sarah says
I have never heard of CRIO BRU and I would love to try it. I have an Electric Pressure Cooker (I am a Pampered Chef Consultant and so mine of course comes from Pampered Chef and I LOVE PRESSURE COOKING 🙂 ) I want to expand my horizons with my Quick Cooker and I love your articles 🙂
Marci says
Sarah, Pampered Chef makes a pressure cooker?! How did I not know this! Do you love it?
Sarah says
Oh my goodness yes!!! I never got into the Instant Pot craze when they first hit the market, but I was able to earn a free Quick Cooker from Pampered Chef from sales goals that I met. I am totally in love!!! It is AMAZING!! 😉 I have never enjoyed making hard boiled eggs before because of the hassle of peeling them. A breeze with my Quick Cooker. I had never made a real cheesecake before. I have now made average one a month since I have gotten my Quick Cooker! Meats come out tender and just everything is so delicious!! Easy to use!! Sorry, but I could brag about it all day :O)
Nancy Kelly says
Never tried Crio Bru, but would like to; especially after reading all the comments on your many posts about it. And stretchy jeans sound good, too. (Four operations on the belly – I think I have a lot of scar tissue there!)
Loved your son’s video. Thanks for sharing that! He’s a love.
Love your blog. ( Your 1st IP cookbook was the 1st one I bought for IP cooking. I love it. Thanks for all you do to perfect things so we can just follow your recipes and serve perfection!
Happy Easter to you & yours.
Marci says
Nancy, Stretchy jeans for the win always!
He’s hilarious, right?! Thanks so much Nancy for your support! I can’t thank you enough. In return, I’ll help get some yummy food on your table 🙂

Oh heck, you have pushed me off the fence! Air fryer here I come! But after I get my hands on the almond butter – a girl has to have her priorities!
Marci says
Rebecca, I 100% approve of your priorities. I Look forward to breakfast hours in advance knowing I’ve got Vanilla Almond Butter and toast coming:). You’ll love the airfryer!

Jill says
I’m so happy I came across your live stream today. Not only am I just learning about my new Instant Pot, but I have been super curious about Cruise Bru but do not know anyone who has ever tried it. Thanks for putting out good information!
Marci says
Jill, thanks for watching! I drink Crio Bru daily, I find it so warm and comforting, even in the summer:). I hope you learned something from the demo as well!
Marilyn A McDonough says
I am watching your pasta presentation!! Am going to look for the rice pasta and try the recipe. Marilyn
Marci says
Marilyn, I link to my favorite brown rice pasta in the mac and cheese and the pasta post, so it’ll be easy to find, it’s my favorite brand of pasta for sure.
Amy says
I’m trying to meditate more!
Marci says
Amy, It’s hard to make it a priority sometimes, but me too 🙂
Marlyne says
You mentioned at the beginning about kids in the kitchen. My kids all wanted to help in the kitchen when they were little. That is until they had to help in the kitchen! I started them out making toast and putting butter on it. They eventually graduated to more dangerous things – using a knife, actual cooking, etc. Today my kids are all wonderful cooks and one is even a well known chef in San Francisco. Now my grandchildren want to help when I am working in the kitchen. A step-stool is a big help for them because they are still quite small. Mostly I let them put cut up items into a salad bowl or into a pot for cooking. They like to stir – be prepared for a mess on this one! All but one hates the clean up. I’m thinking that one day they will be great cooks as well.
Marci says
Marlyne, I love that you’re keeping all these kids in the kitchen! What a great life skill! I love how when they are young, any task is exciting. That’s definitely the time to start.
Marcia says
This sounds delicious, can’t wait to try it.
Marci says
Marcia, you’ll love it 🙂
Tyler Fetzer says
I love Crio Bru! I can’t wait to try this recipe! I also loved your but about comfy jeans. I never wore stretchy pants or leggings before, but I just had a baby and can’t (or won’t) give up the leggings now!
Marci says
Tyler, I’m obsessed with Crio bru as well 🙂 It’s so hard going back to jeans after leggings!
Kerra says
Yum. Strawberry and chocolate are a divine combination.
Marci says
Kerra, Always 🙂
Nicole says
Your recipe sounds awesome!! I just love crio in the instant pot. So easy! I I need to start meditating too. I don’t handle crap or change very good. So thanks for the advice!
Marci says
Nicole, crio is so much stronger in the pressure cooker too! Mediation will for sure help you handle your “crap” 😉
Arlene Bingham says
Thank you for all the different ways to make Crio Bru I have been drinking Crio Bru for the past 6 year.
Marci says
Arlene, keeps it interesting, right?! You’re so welcome 🙂
Jamee says
Let me know what you find out about comfy jeans I’m in desperate need too! Also I’ve wondered about an air fryer as well but haven’t got one yet. So this is good to know!
Marci says
Jamee, there must be a pair out there that doesn’t have me dreaming of taking them off after 5 minutes! I love the air fryer. I warmed up the last of my Lemon Quinoa in it last night and it was so good! Crispy bites of chicken and quinoa, yum!
Laurel says
PWS? What? That is crazy! Im sure I’m not alone in saying, I’ve never heard of that. Thank you for your meet the reader segment. Its incredible of you to bring our attention to things like this, I can’t imagine dealing with that all the time. Certainly changed my perspective on things. Also this pink crio bru has my mind churning with tea party ideas. That blush pink drink is gorgeous!
Marci says
Laurel, Even in my life as an NP, I never saw a patient with PWS. However, that is what I loved most working at the children’s hospital was watching how strong children could be. They just wanted to get better and back to playing, I Loved those kiddos. This Crio was so good! My kids were in heaven and in reality, it’s a lot better than when they chug straight strawberry milk so win-win!
Tara says
I have 5 boys and manners was something we struggled with a lot as they were little. But I can tell you that it does get better! The oldest is 16 and is extremely well mannered, as is my 8 year old. The 14 year old is much better in public than at home, but he is still better than he was. The other two are still little, so we are still working on it.
Marci says
Tara, that is music to my ears! I know they are very aware of the line they are crossing, so I take comfort that they at least recognize what’s appropriate. You gave me hope!
Megan says
I’m so intrigued by the strawberry crio bru, and the meditation. I certainly need both haha! I’m also dying to try the rx butters! Sorry, no advice for manners since I have 4 boys and count my husband as my fifth child. 🙄 Besides threatening them with their life 😂. My latest thing I’m loving in the air fryer is I made chicken salad with Greek yogurt (so I can eat a ton haha), then put it on bell peppers and endive leaves, topped with a little Parmigiano Reggiano and cooked for 5 minutes. So good!!
Marci says
Oh my gosh Megan, you will die over the Rx butters! I’m a nut butter crazy person anyways but that almond vanilla one on toast is positively dreamy! My husband has gotten plenty of looks from me at the dinner table, that’s for sure! Oh wow, send me your chicken salad recipe, that sounds so good!
Dawn says
This drink looks amazing! And I’m looking forward to the jean recommendations too. Currently I just wear Sonoma skinny jeans from Kohls.
Marci says
Dawn, there’s been a few suggestions for Kohls pants, I’ve never even tried pants on there! I will now 🙂
Anita says
Marci, your son is a hoot and a half! Love your ‘chats’. Your grandmother friend.
Marci says
Anita, he’s hilarious! I love these videos of him so much, they never get old for me.
Karen says
While I also deal with fairly extreme OCD in that I can’t do my work as a writer without a clean house and the dishes done, I have always encouraged my kids to cook alongside me. Like you, my mom was not comfortable with me working next to her in the kitchen and the one time she allowed me full reign in the 8th grade was the time I set the kitchen carpeting (yes I am THAT old to remember kitchen carpeting) on fire. I was trying to make crepe souzettes flambe for New Year’s Eve and kind of freaked out when the Grand Marnier actually ignited–only it ignited a dish towel, which I promptly dropped….on the floor. Well, you get the gist. We had our own fireworks on New Year’s Eve that year!
I digress, I homeschooled my kids and made it a point to teach them everything about cooking and incorporated it into their learning. To this day, they can all cook and bake and now i work with the grandkids to help them enjoy the scientific wonders of cooking and baking. My 3-year-old granddaughter is able to crack eggs one-handed without getting shells into the bowl. True, there is often flour on the floor, whipped cream stuck to the walls and dropped liquids of all sorts on the floor–but with each mistake, they are learning and I am learning to relax. It’s a win-win!
Marci says
Karen, Oh wow, well if that isn’t worst case scenario right there! Perhaps I need to imagine those flames when I’m stressing over flour puffing all over the place. You’ve inspired me to keep at it, my daughter LOVES being in the kitchen. It makes her whole world to create there. Breathe in, breathe out, I can do this 🙂
Karen says
Yes! that’s what I kept in the back of my mind when my kids were cooking and now my grandkids–just the other day, Amaya turned on the mixer on too high a speed and sent flour spinning all around the kitchen! I gulped and then thought, “could be worse, she could have set fire to the place” ha ha!
Michelle says
Love a new crop Bru recipe!
I have started making my own jeans for the best fit. But that’s quite an under taking.
If found I like the fit of Lauren Conrad from kohl’s.
Marci says
Michelle, I am dying of jealousy right now. I’ve said since I was a teenager that I could design a much better pair of jeans than I’ve ever bought, just don’t have that sewing skill, unfortunately. I’ll look into the Lauren Conrad pair, thank you!
Judy says
Love your recipes, email, and blog. I don’t know whether I love my instant pot or air fryer, but I use both regularly. I even did a London broil for Christmas in the air fryer. You have gotten me interested in crio bru That will have to be my next thing to try!
Marci says
Judy, oh wow, a London Broil in the air fryer, I’m dying of curiosity on that now! I need to venture out more apparently! You’ll love Crio Bru and thank you so much for your kind words 🙂
MaryEllen says
I’m watching for jeans recommendations!! 😀
Marci says
MaryEllen, I’m hoping for a miracle 🙂
