The real name for this recipe is “The Ultimate Cold and Flu Fighting, Immune Boosting, Youth Preserving, Metabolism Burning, Invincible Making, Bomber Smoothie” – but the title didn’t really roll off the tongue (and may or may not be a bit misleading). So here is the Kefir Blueberry Elderberry Smoothie!

But hopefully by now you’ve either got a batch of Elderberry syrup waiting for you in the fridge or at least have some Elderberries coming from good ol’ Amazon, because I’ve got the ultimate sick season smoothie comin’ at ya! I plan on feeding this smoothie to my family as many mornings as I can get away with. Then when it gets old, I’ll sprinkle it with chocolate chips, and it’ll be back in the game!
My family all came down with the flu February of 2016 and it was the most miserable illness I’ve ever experienced. My children barely left the couch, missed a lot of school, and coughed and coughed and coughed. Being the mom, I kept going as much as possible in order to take care of everyone, and then would go to bed in tears because I just couldn’t stand the thoughts of getting up and doing it again the next day.
And if that’s not enough to convince you of the misery this flu virus inflicted, it very literally made a grown man cry. Not to embarrass my rough and tough, moto stud husband or anything, but I’ve seen him shed tears exactly ONE time in the 12 years we’ve been married, and that’s when he had the flu. I’m posting that to the world with the hopes that his motohead buddies don’t read food and decor blogs 🙂
I don’t believe there’s any single bullet proof method to preventing viruses, but after that experience, I’m willing to do just about anything to not go through that again.
